Just a little help needed with answers I have, but cannot fully parse:
1a Mark - a book written about start of Christian Church ...(8) answer: accent . Where does the "e" come from? elipse ?
18a husband with cap is a rugby player (6.4) All I can see is Center half (American spelling)

CE often stands for Church in crosswords. think it comes from Church of England.

Thanks trevor. I was taking CC for starting letters. I am wondering about the ... as I also need help with the next clue: 5a ... sometime after King Edward backed Wycliffe, say (8) I have Reformer. I can see RE for King Edward, but not the rest. The elipse is there again. (Wycliffe being a religious reformer)

Better = cap/do better
Half = rugby player.
