9a. I've got the answer, but don't understand why !
"Egg's general character is about right for starter"(10) - I have "Minestrone", which is a starter, obviously, but where does the egg come in ?

Mine = egg
Tone= general character
the 's' comes from 'egg's'/mine's, then an 'r' is added for 'about right'.
Mines t r one.

Apparently egg is slang for a mine or bomb according to Chambers dictionary.
