I need just ONE last piece of this puzzle, please:

1d: task/area assigned to an organisation

I have R?M?T

The R is from RASTER (1ac: TV Screen pattern)
The M is from arMs race (weapons competition)
The T is from tiT (small bird)

None of my dictionaries give REMIT as a task, so????

Thanks.

As I mentioned, the definition or "remit" doesn't fit.... at least according to my dictionaries. Is this maybe an archaic expression?

I didn't read your post to the end!

I think REMIT is correct for task - "It's in his remit". I'm surprised the dictionaries don't give this - what do they give?

Oxford dicionary shows:
1. the task or area of activity officially assigned to an individual or organization:
the committee was becoming caught up in issues that did not fall within its remit
