Hi Sylvie.

Do you have any crossing letters that you can give us for this answer?

Sorry, no I haven't, I'm afraid.

So far I've pondered on W(HIM) to satrt things off but cannot take it any further.

I think it may be a synonym for 'opener' or even a cricketer.

Which publication does this come from? That might help us to see what is in the mind of the compiler.

I was thinking maybe Pandora? But I can't get the exact wordplay...

Pandora was the opener of a jar/box.
Pan held 'woods' amongst his portfolio of godships.
   Dora is a girl's name.

But then where would 'American' come into play?

Scratching my head ...

Could you give us one or more of the crossing clues, Sylvie -- and as John said, knowing the compiler or newspaper might help.

Does anyone know if there is/was a cricketer called FAIRMAM?

FIR about A + MAM

It's the best I can do, but Google doesn't help.

Random musings: BALSAM and BATSMAN...

Have no idea whether that's any help in any shape or form! Well, a batsman IS an opener...but how to make the clue work is another thing altogether!
