Everybody still bright eyed and bushy tailed ? Grey matter chugging away grand style ? Thought not, but I have one clue to get - well one letter actually, 24d .
u-e - I'm sure it's blindingly obvious (like ute for e.g.)
but is it ? And why ? All & any answers will be either totally ignored or pounced upon. Thanks.

Good morning, Mopsy.
Your example is the correct answer.
Ute is a native American ("Indian ") tribe. The same word is an abbreviation for "utility truck" which is commonly used in Australia.
