Turn after river close to village - take it (5) r-a-t. Can only think it is react - but why? Or, I have another clue wrong!

I thought reast = to become rancid = turn
r + east r = river but I cannot explain the rest. Can't explain REACT either. Over to ye!

Can only think of react. I am stuck on 14a - Ancient game.nim? no merriness involved (4,4,6)
and also 6a Author almost out of order (4)

Carramba! My earlier 'stab' was OK. It's REAST. Why? REAST = to go rancid = turn. And, close to villag(e) = E = EAST. Hence R + EAST
