The gist of the other answers vary from;

Titles of TV shows

so its a broad field we are searching in.

Hi Helen.

Back to see that I upset you. No offence was intended, so I'm sorry about that.

Although I wrote "As per previous thread ..." (not "As per previous post...") and
wasn't referring to your post at all, I can see why you might be upset.

I was referring to another thread about this clue from some weeks(?) ago in which
I first suggested 'Elipton' and was roundly ignored. Ever since, I've been carrying
this huge chip on my shoulder and so jumped straight back in when I saw Beaky's
new thread.

JimC (and it wasn't me that broke this thread!)

Hi JIMC, I see now that no offence was intended, I am brand new at this (a week) still learning the machine even, I did not know the diff between 'post' and 'thread' so can we put this aside and I promise to be more balanced in my posts, a chips on both shoulders perhaps?

Hi Beaky.

For the purposes of your quiz ... 'Elipton' = best ignored.
I'd wager a lot that almost no-one anywhere in the whole
world has heard of it/them (including most visitors to
the Edinburgh Castle Pub, S.F.).

However, the top secret 'Elipton device' is another matter
altogether and sounds much more interesting and scary!

Well JimC, we've all heard of Elipton now and are expecting their next appearance to be in Wembley Stadium!! I also found the "Elipton Device" on Google and it sounds pretty scary.

OK, so given the digression in the nature of the responses, is it not safe to assume that no-one knows the answer to the "cryptic" clue: 'an offence in the monarch's school'??! I notice that some helpful soles proffered words which contain the word "sin" - interestingly, without solving (or explaining) the clue. This is mere guesswork - anyone 'actually' know the answer?! Without - and you know who you are - gues"sin"g??!

alex - and I\'m thinking you know this - it\'s \"souls\" not \"soles\", in the context to which you\'re referring...
