I can't teach you Stuart but can hopefully point you in the right direction.
You really do need to use the cryptic clues to get a positive solution.
They really are easier than the straight clues and give less ambiguous results.
With cryptic clues the first or last word(s) will be the definition. The rest of the words provide guidance.
For example.
simple clue: paramount 8
cryptic: leading medical officer into woods
That tells you right away that the word you are looking for is a synonym of 'paramount' and also 'leading'.
Now for the guidance.
Medical officer is abbreviated to MO
Another word for woods is FOREST
Put MO in FOREST
The solution is FOREMOST
