I also have gin palaces: G (in) P a lace's (lace = tie). However, I have yet to understand 19a: One might get down to this business of investigating? I have D?S?O, which looks like 'disco'. DASCO makes more sense of the clue, if it exists (reverse of sad + co(ompany)!
