A badger roots for its food. So it's unlikely to do this at the entrance of the sett. Rootless means to having no roots belonging nowhere. Hope that explains it Bill.
I can find rootle on the internet but not in Chambers. It gives as the second def: "root earlier wroot to turn up with the snout.........." There you go!
