Tried an American Cryptic yesterday, but as they cant spell gave up

You going to have to get this one yourself, but I'll give you another couple of hints.

10A A cake's returned with layers.

Write a type of cake backwards and you'll get a layered rock formation. That will give you the fourth letter of 1D and it's not "D". Now look up the French translation of a form of ammunition. and you'll get 1D.
