38a Cracks previously bring about new society. Before entry into the grid it has 5 letters, 3 of which are N,E,S

Hopefully the missing letter from these along with my other 6 will make some sense!!

If you have the highlighted word, then look at the symmetrically placed clue & read it upwards.
If you check the three words on Wikipedia all should
become clear.
