Thanks, xwordfan! Unfortunately the "D" of
the one across is the first letter of the one
going down. DEUS possibly?

It is Deus. E.g. tributes = DUES and "central portion thereof given over" gives DEUS

Brilliant! Thanks, Steve. I've finished this one
now, but still can't fully figure out two of the
answers. There is 23 Down, which is "Acacia
giving a bit of shade over garden path". And
24 Ac., which is "Mouse's tail's out of place
in this church alcove?"
The answers I have are MALLEE and SHRINE

23D is SALLEE = Acacia
S (bit of shade) + ALLEE (garden path)

Thanks again, Steve. I hadn't entered "mallee"
because I couldn't link this plant to an acacia
but your answer is obviously the one.

Rocketman has already asked about 24 Ac. "Mouse's tail's out of place in this church alcove?".
I agree that the answer is SHRINE (=alcove) but why? I keep thinking that "Mouse's tail" is the letter E which has been moved but it doesn't help :)

I asked on The AnswerBank and got the answer:

mouse = SHINER (black eye); the R is out of place --> SHRINE
