Correct as far as I am concerned, GK - as I implied, the clues are so well constructed that the definition parts are (very!) far from obvious - to me, at least.

OK my paltry efforts today:
3 SEA LAVENDER - a sea-shore plant I can tell a story about; SEAL A VENDER (sounds like or nearly is VENDOR)
4 SCARED (subtractive anagram)

I am offering just #4 as this is the only one I am confident is correct:

4. (subtractive anagram) SCARED (chicken)

Thanks jolan, but my brain hurts. J

btw the story - an English plantswoman called Ellen Wilmott:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Willmott
developed a cultivar of Sea Lavender that she was very impressed by. When she visited other people's gardens, she always took an opportunity to drop a few seeds. The plants would germinate and the form became known as "Mrs Wilmott's Ghost", as its presence showed her passing.

Well, well! I look forward to a week like this one. A rare occasion indeed on this site.

Hi also to Ari and Jazz

The two published are correct (and, vendor and vender are given equal status in Chambers).

I'll leave things hanging (pardon me!) for the moment to see if the rest will emerge.
