Ok, so I know what the author says the answer is, but I want to know how the clue pans out. Yes I recognise the "determinative" word , but what the hell has the rest of the clue got to do with it? Surely it's not just there for padding?
Here's the clue in full:
"For example, diamonds around the edges of bedroom table " (6)
You tell me?

I don't have the puzzle (or your answer), but my guess is that it's SUBMIT: diamonds/SUIT around the edges of B(edroo)M.

And I think "for example, diamonds" is fairer than just "diamonds", so I don't see any padding in the clue at all.

Thanks Aristophenes, I think you may have actually explained to workings indeed .
I got the word but couldn't work out why it was correct.
Is it not amazing how you can simply not see something, then some time later simply cannot believe you didn't?
