Last one.

9a Did one have to be blind to associate Man mounting toward a dominating position? (10)

A?C?N?A?C?

It can only be Ascendance or Ascendancy, but I don't want to have to plump for one or the other. Any thoughts?

and Malthilde Blind wrote

The Ascent of Man - which doesn't help decide on either!

BTW - This is my first question in the new style - and I'm not enjoying writing in this poky little box !

I would go for Ascendancy, to me, it fits the definition better.

I probably will plump for ascendancy - but there seems to be no definitive answer. The TLS often has clues like this and its BLIND chance if you pick the one the setter was thinking of.

It seems pretty telling that only three people have entered a perfect solution on The Times Crossword Club Site.

....Aah well. I went for Ascendancy - and it was wrong.

If you see anyone else asking about this clue - tell them to put ascendance.

It may be wrong but it still seems the better answer to me. Sorry if I led you up the garden path.

No, no , its not you kilowatt. Its the setter. Its a tough crossword with a prize of £40, and now I feel I've wasted an hour solving it for nothing.
