Thanks Jim C and helena. Sounds like BRIGG is the answer, although why two G's for the ship ?. I know a brig is a two masted sailing ship, and Raymond Briggs wrote The Snowman.
The fact that BRIGG is also a town near Scunthorpe makes me feel this is the correct answer.
