10 ac (7 letters) - It's a pain if pup finally slips lead! L_M_A_O. I think it must be LUMBAGO, but I can't see why.

I think Plumbago is an old word for the metal lead (Pb). So take the final letter of pup (ie "p") away and you are left with your answer LUMBAGO.

Oh, right answer but wrong explanation. Plumbum is the old word for lead. Plumbago is the name of a plant/shrub, with the common name of leadwort! So that sort of explains it...

I've no idea Jerry, as I haven't got the crossword! What's the clue and length and, if you don't want to give the answer, what supporting letters?

Hi Jerry,

I have put STRIDENCY for 28a. I assume Stride is a jazz style, with C (first of common) in NY (New York).
