If the L is really an I, could the A really be an E?

if the answer is yes then it could be REFINED SUGAR.

... But if the L is really an L and the A is really an A, then Chambers lists 166 possibilities (don't you just love that word as it has the same number of "i"s as Mississippi). Some good ones are ANGLIAN, CHILEAN, ITALIAN, RAILWAY, URALIAN and ZOILEAN. A bit more esoteric is AEOLIAN and ones to be definitely avoided are COALTAR, NUCLEAR and REALGAR. The latter as it has the chemical formula of AsS (I'll leave the reader to figure that one out).

Hi John (from Arran)
I should think that the AEOLIAN variety should also best be avoided especially when taking tea with the vicar!!
