I'm working from the wiki page and was using the military before 1956 and the current at the top. There was a suggestion to use r but how to r... doesn't make sense, the other pre-1956 words are b,p,q,s,u and z and of the current there's only t and possibly r that are verbs. If the grid looked more like a chessboard I would go with q but I might as well go for z cos it looks stripey!

singer,Im still not sure, maybe radio or roger? I know 'how to roger/radio' dosnt sound right but in brewers all relevant info is listed under 'roger'?

Thanks for all the help here. It would be difficult to find the reference in Brewers without help as the two relevant tables are well hidden.
Can anyone help me justify two answers -
5D Here you could crawl about 500m to finish (4) I can see how LIDO is defined by the first 4 words but can't see what's going on in the rest of the clue.
49A Huntsmen square behind doctor shunning plant fibres (7) JAEGERS but how is the answer obtained?

In Chambers check LI, and look closely at entries for JAEGER.

unclued, li=approx third mile, do=finish
jaegers=huntsmen,Dr jaeger (who shunned plant fibres) + s(square)
