Only just seen your post and there seems to be no one else around. 7a is an expression used for the "wife" 1d is a sauce (hidden backwards in the clue) 2d double definition of "keep" and undealt cards. 4d Uncle Sam + latin for eggs + r (anagram for the large urn)

Thanks Chrise. I'd got that answer for 16A in quick solve, but was too thick to see it. The penny hasn't dropped on 5d yet, still pondering. I had to give up yesterday, the computer just froze.
Mondrian, glad to hear about Old Gal. 7a is an outrageous expression that suggests wives are superior to husbands!

Thanks jazzgirl and bees. Of course I did get that first one across. Given how obscure some of the clues are, I could not actually believe that the first 3 letters of the clue were the same as the first 3 of the answer!!! First time for that. See you next week.
