I thought there would have been more threads on this topic. Although I have managed to solve well over half the clues I am stuck on the first across clue. One of the answers is fireplace but could anyone help me to get the other. The last two downclues also baffle me.
I have tried all ways to fit my answers in to the grid but without success. A very very broad hint or better woud be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You are correct that 1a is fireplace and needs to be entered as FREPLICAE to meet the 'mixed doubles'theme.
The other part of the clue contains COUPLE.

Forgot to mention that the last two down clues
contain MATCH & CLONE.

I have one more clue to solve though, 9 down -itri-e . There are a few possible answers but I cannot work out the reason for it from the clue given. Help please.

Hi have done some of the clues includeing fireplave but have noidea why it changes as tony says . by the last 2 downs do you mean 10 and 17 coz i have a anagram for one of those.P lease can I have some morehelp on how and which change.Am not doing very wellthis week.Thank U
