I've got both 15dn and 31ac as themed answers. Sorry ixion, I'm with tony on the parsing of 31ac.

Agreed, it does make more sense and apt that it needs the whole "acid".

Are we just handing out solutions on a prize crossword? Seems to me there should be some boundaries about how much information is passed around ...

For what it's worth, I agree wholly with prospero.

Thanks to ixion #95 and greedykite #96.

Despite completing the crossword and fully 'getting' the theme/device I was completely stumped as to how the 22s 'worked.' Realised what the definition was but the wordplay beat me.

Won't go into all the weird & wonderful ways I tried to parse this - 'acid' = 'lsd' completely evaded me (haven't led a particularly sheltered life!) and L(itmus) P(aper) for 'new' currency also.

Thanks again.

prospero and peterm are absolutely right at poste 107 & 108. I tried to make this point a few weeks ago and was amused by the responses.

I have come back today just to read the messages for Araucaria and posted just next to the thread was a query on today's Guardian prize with a solution provided in the second post. Why not try gentle and thought-provoking hints?

It's a gripe that is often made. It would be interesting to know the views of some of the other regulars.

I agree it's best to give gentle hints...and that's how it usually starts, it does tend to gradually escalate though.
