I'm stuck on the last clue for this:
.....21A grip; take effect (4)
I have ?i?e

The only thing I can think of is "vise" but can find nothing that says that "vise" can mean "take effect"! It's probably something obvious, but can't see it now. Can anyone help. please?????

Hmmmm.... Jazzgirl, I know you're always right, but I wouldn't imagine either "grip" or "take effect" for "bite". Can't think of a single sentence using those words in the sense of grip! I looked it up on dictionary.com and it does list grip, but not "take effect"...?? Thanks for the answer however. You must have an amazing vocabulary!

Way down the page at No.3 shows: take effect, work, be effective, take hold, come into force, etc.
