Thank you so, so much. Moira is 'girl taking me for french artist' leaving ''China with crack that's very small' which fits paltry but not sure it's correct. First time I have tried using the forum. You are a genius.

paltry looks good - china - cockney for mate, pal + try - simile for a crack at something

China - mate (China plate rhyming slang) so =Pal + crack = try (as in have a crack at something), so "paltry" looks good.
