26 Across

Picture the difference between B and C in America

I have H?L? ?I?T

The solution would appear to HALF TINT because it fits and because a half tint is a kind of picture but how does "the difference between B and C in America" fit in?

It is my last clue to finish the crossword but I refuse to put the answer in until I understand 100% of the clue!

Some opthalmic lenses are labelled A,B,C etc. according to the tint.

Is it HALF TONE as in music? I have dietetic for 22d which give the T.

I thought about that but I could find no reference to it. If it is, it does not seem to me to be a very good clue. Thanks, anyway.

In England we call it a semitone but to Americans it is a half tone.

Sorry rmleake , I put the wrong cross letters in my original post (hangover from yesterday!). I should have put H?L? T?N?. I have DIETETIC for 22 down.

Thanks, jazzgirl. Your solution seems very plausible. I will wait and see if any other ideas turn up!

I agree with rmleake. Half tone it is(type of drawing and also between two notes in music)

Thanks, again, rmleake. I have found references in Chambers to semitone and half tone as from B to C so I think you are spot on. Sufficient for me to put the answer in grid.
