I like SAUCER - one who "sauces", hence cook?

think 3rd letter is L, so could be salver or silver. Don't know connection with cook though

think 14d is stumped

Thanks everybody. It looks like 'silver' is correct - Long John Silver was hired to be the cook on the Hispaniola. This also fits with the 'stumped' ian mentioned above.

17D looks like DIKTAT (or DITTIT) for : sanction ?I?T?T

29D MAROR:
