think 3rd letter is L, so could be salver or silver. Don't know connection with cook though

Thanks everybody. It looks like 'silver' is correct - Long John Silver was hired to be the cook on the Hispaniola. This also fits with the 'stumped' ian mentioned above.

a portion of horseradish or other bitter herb that is eaten at the Seder meal on Passover.
