Lovely puzzle this, with a real head-scratcher of a competition clue.

Can't for the life of me parse 8d though - I'm about to give a spoiler.

Un'devilled' it reads 'it 's topping for those in the sun, a certain core.'

I'm pretty sure it's PITH (PIT are right), as in 'core', but have no idea why! Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

And I agree it's a lovely puzzle. The answer to 34ac is easy enough once you've got the checked letters, but it took quite a while to see where it fitted into the clue.

All done and all very satisfying except... I can't for the life of me insert my answer for 10across into the devilled clue. I'm pretty certain I have the answer, but a hint as to where it should go would be appreciated.

Thanks - and a very merry Christmas to all.

It goes after the g in guns. You'll need to fiddle with the spacing in the preceding letters a bit, and delete the hyphen, but it will all make sense.

And a merry Christmas to you too, cmk.

Ho ho ho Peter - thanks for that and for your correction. I thought I was really going mad at first, then all became claret. I mean clear.

Cheers

I may be kicking myself but...where does the 34A inclusion start? It sort of works if put after "their" but it seems a bit too easy.

Hi ixion. After the n in nets. It gives a couple of pretty obscure words, so no need to kick yourself. Merry Christmas.
