Sense of loss as bird drops crest (5) _g_e_t Looks as if it should be (r)egret, but that doesn't quite fit with the clue. Any opinions please?

Have to agree! 'Sense of loss' is clearly 'regret' but it's this that 'drops' its 'crest(top)' leaving the bird 'egret'.
Unusual as Paul is normally very precise with his clueing I think but don't see how it can be anything else.
I did toy with 'Eaglet' dropping 'E' to give 'aglet' but this means something completely different to 'sense of loss'.

I answered on a previous post but do agree that the clue is worded the wrong way round.

I too thought of aglet, but no shoelaces involved.
