After a great start with this, I've got stuck -any help would be welcome.

1 A. Old resident of Indian Ocean island port's hot (8) m?la???h
(I thought of 'malagash' - but I don't think that has anything to do with the Indian ocean.)
6 D. Pear-tree cultivated,say,two thirds in a different form (8) r?t?at?r

NB. This is a themed crossword. The preamble mentions 'in nine cells[adjacent or diagonally adjacent] cells clash. These clashes must be resolved appropriately...)
I don't know if these two clues are affected by this.

Thanks, that sounds great - when I googled earlier, I got info about Malagash and/in Nova Scotia!

Repeater? (anagram of Pear tree) Meaning not in Chambers but Collins gives it as "one of three signal flags hoisted with others to indicate that one of the top three is to be repeated" so it could fit the sense?

Thanks again, ab - I thought of 'repeater' earlier, but was almost certain of the 't' as third letter. The clue for that was 'You can hear part of car that's round exhaust' - and I got 'tire'/tyre.
The clashing letters might be involved here, so maybe that's why I'm getting in a tangle!

Two thirds in decimal form is .6666666666 recurring which is a repeater.
