The unclued 3d - is the fourth letter R or T, presumably in relation to 13a?

It's a T, blignop -- in relation to one other unclued solution, yes!

Very difficult to give hints to these two, but I'll try:
11a Urdu word for a p'man or soldier on horseback originally
7d Def. defiantly: think of a word meaning arrogant -- that will help!

Sorry greedy kite.

I am still struggling with this difficult puzzle. Can you, or anyone, please help by telling how to solve the italicised clues?
I assume that we have to PUT something in the solutions. Is it the same word/letters?

Rosie, it's NOT the same word - it's a selection of words, meaning much the same thing. (The fourth word of the phrase, mentioned in the preamble, is the important one.)These words are inserted into the answers of the italicised clues , and still end up as real words.

Thanks chips. I'll concentrate on the 4th word
and hopefully see the light.

I almost forgot (when I was doing the crossword) that the answers to the italicised entries are defined by an unclued answer. It all got a bit easier for me once I found the first pair/two that went together.
