This is driving the wife and I nuts. It should be so easy BUT......
The clue reads 'The way a sailor puts up beds'.
We have the following **R*T*
and have come up with BERATE and SURETY but dont really know why either of them should fit.
Any thoughts?

Way is ST, street, A sailor is a tar backwards, giving strata.

Strata is the plural of stratum, meaning a bed of sedimentary rock.
