Not sure if 4d is polygny or polygmy! The former seems right but that makes 15a really odd! And I can't do 4a or 9a either ... and if someone can explain why 18a is sorceresses (I presume headless mounts is orses). Please put me out of my misery. Many thanks.

Of course! Thank you! Re clues: 4a was Beginner's gold p-t-o-, 9a was Ancient city objects to be crossed l-e-e- but I could be wrong. And polygyny and polygamy are almost synonymous so I'll stick with polygamy ... though not as a life style!

Thanks one and all! Clearly I will have to forget all about polygamy and rethink that corner of the puzzle. My reasoning was a bit wonky anyway: based on Polly with one l for the girl and I was struggling to find a posh Roman garment! Bye for now ...
