rosie has told us the corssword and details. Its the Enigmatic Variations Crossword No. 1047 from The Telegraph.

Its one of the tougher crosswords out there, like the Azed, with fewer solvers on here - hence the lack of response.

Bottom row, fifth from the left. I'm still wondering what to put in those four fenced off squares. It could equally well be a few things.

I have assumed that the word connected with the last two words running round the perimeter
is to be placed in the blocked off area.

But if I'm thinking what I think you're thinking, Tony, I don't see how that word (or any other apart from "spot") relates to the title: X MARKS THE ????

Orson I agree that spot fits the title but the letter omitted from the 14 answers (P - pennies) 'does not emerge' from the (other word).

33a Do(p)ing

33d Del (operator) E

There is a difference of opinion regarding the blanked-off area.
SPOT satisfies the Title while Slot fits the vending machine connection.
As I said in an earlier post there is also the hint in the preamble about the omitted letter (P). If it is taken that P is Pennies,
and they 'do not emerge' (from the machine) then SLOT would seem to be the correct one.

Manic Mary

I was about to post off my entry when I suddenly noticed the letter above the blanked-off area! That would seem to resolve the ambiguity.
