Jumping Jehosaphat, this has been a
struggle! I'm now just down to the one
clue, 38 Down, which reads:-
"Drama spoils probation periods".
Is this "NOVICIATE" or "NOVITIATE"?
(or neither)

Novitiates

No = Japanese drama
vitiates = spoils

I should point out that the answer is
10 letters long, so to either of those
possible solutions should be added an "S"!

I'm not sure of my answer for 47a

Rack railway- my elder son is nuts about trains so i know more than I ever wanted to about them! These kind go up steep sides.

This one is a "rack railway", a type of
rack-and-pinion railway used in certain
countries. You certainly learn a lot
solving this setter's efforts!
