Once again, thanbk you very much to all who took part. I love setting them - but hate solving them. That's why I so much admire you folks.

Just for completion (although not necessary) I'll append my working. See you next week, hopefully. John

1. anag(funny) of “monkeys write” = NEW YORK TIMES = paper
2. case = JACKET; sounds = STRAITS; sounds out... = strait(jacket)s = STRAITJACKETS
3. (cryptic) FAN OVENS
4. judge ‘shortly’ = ref, returns = fer; initial ruling = r; ‘judge with’... = ferr; action = deed; yielding de(ferr)ed = DEFERRED = put off.
5. socialize = mix; place = lieu (in ‘place’ of = in ‘lieu’ of); socialize about place = mi(lieu)x = MILIEUX = settings (Chambers & Oxford Thesauri; milieu = setting)
