Hi Brian,
I think you have the first letter wrong,as I think
the answer is COLNE i.e. COL=Pass NE north east
The Colne is a river in Essex

Thanks. Yes, I have 18 down wrong: Shropshire hill range - one in strange accord. (7) c?R?d??
I'm sure of the other letters, but I don't know any Shropshire hill ranges.

thanks, but that was what I had in the first place. The last letter needs to be C, which is the first letter of 27 across, Colne. I'm sure Colne is right, as my colleague kindly supplied it.
