I think first word must be Grass(AS IN RUMINANT)- second word *E**D - any ideas ?

many thanks, Rusty, and apologies for the delay in saying so, I was out most of yesterday. It's funny how one gets into a rut when you think you've got part of the answer. I hadn't heard of Goats Beard as a plant, but now it makes perfect sense !!

Can be another name for old man's beard, wild clematis. (Common plant names vary in different parts of the country though).

Most usually Goat's Beard is Aruncus, often used as a border plant in gardens. It's a bit like a very large meadow-sweet.
