34A: Getting drunk artist imbibes, missing company(6): Lo*ely. Can only be "lonely", surely, but can anyone explain why?

This was the last one I got - I think you have Lely (Peter Lely, Charles I court painter) around ON (Chambers advb: 'on the way to getting drunk').

Thanks, Barista. I worked it out as soon as I'd posted my entry - I looked up "Lely", and then found the reference to "on the way to being drunk" in Chambers. Thank you again, though.

Aha! I see now. I had assumed that G = German and A = area instead of GAU. Thanks a lot!
