It’s a down clue: End speech lastly with captain’s record, allegedly. (8)

I got the answer to be Epilogue (I think I had the second letter and every alternate one after that) but I don’t understand quite how it fits the clue.
I’d appreciate help in seeing it…

Isn't the captain's record a LOG?

Yes, I can see the 'log' part but not the rest.

Could relate to Epi (Greek prefix) see here
