"Fool's mate" was the hidden theme of a CAM puzzle this year that fooled all of us for a long time (no wonder with me, I know nothing about chess)!

I don't know the puzzle but could it be "mockery"? Presumably not "meiosis" = litotes=ironic understatement e.g. not very nice weather.

P.S. I thought of AB's "mordant" too, though it really ought to be a noun & not an adjective ("wit")!

Thought (and think) so too, but presumed if "sarcasm" fitted with other "a" then "mordant" might too.
