Clue: sets aside Tom's battle scars?

answer; Earmarks

can someone explain why or how you arrive at the answer. For me 'Set aside' = 'earmark', scars could be marks but where does Tom & battle come into the clue/answer?

Could relate the the war of jenkins ear between Britain and Spain. This was coined by Thomas Carlyle(Tom?) when a captain of a british merchant ship had his ear cut off. Just google "war of jenkins ear"...I may be wrong though!

chrisg's explanation occured to me, but I think the clue would have referred to Robert (Jenkins)'s ear.

I suspect that 'Tom' just refers to a cat. Their ears get the worst of their scraps.

The more I think about it the less likely my explanation holds water! I agree with fex

I like the cat answer but I wouldn't have thought of it in a million years.
