Answer to 1dn. M-T-L- "Immediate forerunner to FA Premiership, say, one lacking boldness".
Answer might be "mettle"? courage/boldness. But why? ME precedes FA in tonic solfa and say could be tell could be "ttle" bur why "Premiership" and why "one lacking" indicating discard an "i"?

Were these clues not in last Saturday's Times cryptic crossword, not in today's numbered in my Times 25,299?

Yes, these are from last week's. Today's has the same number 25299 with different clues.
