Two little 5 letter interlinking clues driving me to distraction:-
20a "Declare opening securing maiden" (5)
N***t - only thing I can come up with is "Nympt" (old speak for named) which gives one the maiden(m)in the middle, but what does "nypt" mean
21d "One embracing one's tender"(5)M?*s*r

admit
miser

...the opening to a mine is Adit - with (m)aiden inside
..Tender as in money - one who keeps tight hold is a miser

many thanks chrisg - it would help if I could differentiate French Guinea from French Guiana, and then I might have got an "a" to start "admit" !!
