Today's puzzle is a gem. It's not as daunting as it at first looks and well worth persevering with. The completed across answers may not be real words, but you know they comprise 2 overlapping real words, which in many answers are pretty easy to identify.

Peterm, your comments inspired me to have another look at this. Am (quite) enjoying it, but think I might have gone wrong.
15 D. Serve e.g. bumpkins devouring what's mostly underdone (8,2 words) ee??????
10 D. Cheap labourer, an outstanding one cutting big trees in pieces (12)
s?st?r??????
It'd be good to know if I've made a mistake somewhere.

You've got a couple of letters wrong malone. 15dn starts with b. You should look for a less well known meaning of bum(p)kin in Chambers. 10dn starts with g. Non-English word, but well known.

Peterm, thanks for all that. I've fixed 14 A, know what 19 D is and am away to work on 15 D.

A hugely satisfying Azed, I thought, with a wonderful 'entry' for the competition clue. But how to clue it, I have no idea. Every time I get excited about one 'half' the other limps like the proverbial lettuce. Suspect there'll be a lot of entries swiftly binned by Mr Crowther, and that mine will be one! Still, I promised myself I'd give it a try every month this year, so shall press on.

Definitely more interesting than normal Barista, I suspect bird returning/leaves may feature in some clues
