Thanks, Mamya. 'And' for 'also' must be right. But 'SS' for on board? I am afraid I am just being dim. The only alternative answer would be 'inlands', I think, which would make no sense.

I think ss is short for steam ship, so putting a word between the two s's means it is on board. It is commonly used. Hope this helps.

Finished this puzzle, but cannot see where
"cardinal" comes into the answer for 23ac,
for which the clue is:- "Taken, as cardinal
suggested". I believe the answer to be
"spoken for", but, as I say, I cannot see
what form "cardinal" takes.

FOUR is a cardinal number and sounds the same as ( spoken) FOR
