There's a difference of opinion in the GOOGLE REFERENCES ABOUT WHETHER IT WAS MEIEVAL OR NOT - 15TH CENTURY seems to be the earliest. It was a sort of cannon (sorry about the caps!)

The scullion with the boiling water might be more reliable than an early cannon, though!
