Thanks to ab & jazzgirl - I should have seen both of those bu the tired mind is too battered from looking to spot what's in front of it!!

I thought possibly SWEEP but I can't twist it mentally to fit the clue......

series of prayers = Novena

Keen is to weep + son s - sweep to make a quick pass (as with the hands)

I had thought of NOVENAS but was discouraged by my inability to think of SOVIETS.

Now I can go to say the midday Office with fewer distractions...............
