Hi,please can anyone explain this clue for me? The answer is BRIDAL, but I don't understand why!

Thanks very much. Can you explain further?
I can see that bridle means "check". Does the word "speech" indicate that it is a homophone? The word "bridal" is related to "wedding" but shouldn't the last (or first) word of a cryptic clue mean the the word which is the solution, in this case "wedding"? In that case why does bridal mean "wedding"?
