You may have worked out that I also failed to solve

3d Dragoon guards colonel as Cambridge wit (9)

for which I (now) have c?l?e?l?y

Will be all done after that one. Thanks

I don't have the crossword but Charles Stuart Calverley was a Cambridge wit (and an Oxford one) so it may be that.

It is.

A quick Google has given me that the "dragoon guards colonel" bit of the clue refers to a character in Patience.
